Koelmiddel kalibratiegassen
Een koelmiddel is een stof of mengsel, gewoonlijk een vloeistof, die in een warmtepomp- en koelcyclus wordt gebruikt. In de meeste cycli ondergaat het een faseovergang van een vloeistof naar een gas en weer terug.

Een koelmiddel is een stof of mengsel, gewoonlijk een vloeistof, die in een warmtepomp- en koelcyclus wordt gebruikt. In de meeste cycli ondergaat het een faseovergang van een vloeistof naar een gas en weer terug. Voor dergelijke doeleinden zijn vele werkvloeistoffen gebruikt. Fluorkoolstoffen, met name chloorfluorkoolstoffen, zijn in de 20e eeuw gemeengoed geworden, maar worden geleidelijk afgeschaft vanwege de gevolgen voor de aantasting van de ozonlaag. Andere gebruikelijke koelmiddelen die in diverse toepassingen worden gebruikt zijn ammoniak, zwaveldioxide en niet-gehalogeneerde koolwaterstoffen zoals propaan.
